My New Theme Song

No, I'm not back from hiatus, no, I'm not a blogging addict. I merely forgot to post this as part of my hiatus. So, you all get it now as my final "for-now" post: a new theme song (or rather two tracks, but used in conjunction just like in the film). Enjoy!

For the time being, I am putting my blog on hiatus. This is not a joke, a prank, or a spam message. It is indeed me, and this is indeed my choice.

I'm at a point in my life where I've had to do something drastic in order to survive. I have no other option before me, and I'd prefer to put all my time into this new endeavor and not into blogging. I've lost far too many battles in recent years, and this new offensive planned is going to take the bulk of my energies.

I don't know how long this will take--perhaps months?--but I do intend to restart this blog. To be honest, though, I've also been considering leaving the blogosphere for quite some time (Come on, if comments are any indication anymore, does anyone even read anymore? And an even smaller percentage actually listen.). But, at least for now, "I shall return."

If you could do me just one last favor. I'm going to be needing prayers in the coming months (perhaps even years, should this attack be fully successful), but before you even consider praying for me, do these two things. Pray for my old comrades, and also, for my new recruits in this renewed assault. I understand my metaphors are vague, but God will know who you mean. They need more help than I do (or at least, I wish them to receive more, or want them to be extra-taken-care-of, or however you want to put it).

Those of you who know my situation will be able to read through my vague hyperbole and implant specifics in your own mind--I merely ask those of you who are aware of such details to please not state them in your comments, for the safety of all parties involved (including myself).

Friend: "Cats and dogs, I love them!"
Spencer: "Oh yeah, me too! With a little bit of tabasco, they're great!"

I do this ALL THE TIME. Another favorite way of mine to do this is, upon being presented with a photograph of a pet (to keep things calm, preferably not the pet belonging to the person I am speaking to), I say, "That picture just makes me hungry...."

Wanna play chess? Part III

So this second go-around was a better response; thanks to all who opened accounts! As many have seen, due to the better features I now prefer Chess.com. I've discovered that you can have correspondence games on the web using them, so I highly recommend opening an accounting.

The chess set I was offering has now been taken, so unless you want to get your own board and men, this is the only way you can play correspondence chess with me. Either way, I will forever encourage chess as a game, as a strategy exercise, and as a mental health exercise.

I received little interest for the first post, but at least one reader opened an account, so that's at least enough for me to mention that I also just opened an account at Chess.com (under the same username, JeanDubois), if anyone is interested.

Perhaps you prefer playing chess with physical chessmen and board? Well, so do I! Enter my next proposition: correspondence chess!

I was first introduced to correspondence chess by, curiously enough, the same friend who opened an account at FICS when I blogged that first post, but I've never played it again. It entails two players, each with their own chess sets, moving one piece and then sending a letter with the information of that move to the other player, who then reads the move, carries it out on his/her own board, then moves his own piece and writes back with that move, and so on and so forth until the game is over. Now correspondence chess is so much easier--no longer are letters necessary, but you (clearly) can do it with everything from email, to phone, to text messaging, or what have you. It does require a knowledge of chess notation, however. It is simple to learn, but the learning curve will be next to nothing when I tell you that I've got a chess set waiting for the first interested reader, with board already notated. (If you already know how to read/write it, great! If not, I can teach you...and I could even teach you how to play if you don't know how.)

The set is inexpensive and nothing to write home about--it's a simple tournament set, with large Staunton style chessmen, a roll-up mat for a board, and a carrying case (which has pockets for a chess record book, pens/pencils, and what appears to be a strap for a chess clock for use in tournaments, which it does not come with). If anyone is interested in playing correspondence chess with me, leave me your contact information below in the comments (if I don't have it already) and I'll get the board to you, and our days-if-not-weeks-long games will commence!

For those of you who think I'm looking for meat for the grinder and will soundly trounce you, fear not: I am truly a beginner. Since opening an account at FICS, I haven't won a game yet!

AA+?!?!!

The U.S. had its AAA credit rating downgraded for the first time by Standard & Poor’s on concern spending cuts agreed on by lawmakers to raise the nation’s borrowing limit won’t be enough to reduce record deficits.

S&P dropped the ranking one level to AA+, after warning on July 14 that it would reduce the rating in the absence of a “credible” plan to lower deficits even if the nation’s $14.3 trillion debt limit was lifted.

I received the news last night; it made me sick. I shake my head in disgust and disbelief at the dishonor of it all. Our brand new international embarrassment goes beyond just that, for I can only ask, what comes next? Do I even want to know?

Favorite Movie Villains

Bouncing off of my favorite movie heroes list, here's a list of what are, in my opinion, some of the best movie villains that I've seen. (Can I really say favorite villains?) Doing this fun post was half the reason I did the first!

The Joker
The Dark Knight

Who else can one choose? Creepy, stomach-turning, and ultimate evil, The Joker is one of the best villains in cinematic history. Why so serious?

Agent Smith
The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions

Come on! He's almost cooler than Neo! Backed by the always-good Hugo Weaving, the portrayal of a frustrated Agent turning into a rogue monster program driven by hate alone wouldn't be half so effective if it had been any other actor. And, as The Joker, he is so quotable--each film has at least one unforgettable Agent Smith speech ("Evolution" in the first, "Purpose" in the second, and "Why do you do it?" in the third). And he looks excellent.

Ra's al-Ghul
Batman Begins

The thing that always gets me about Ra's is how right he is. Listen to him, what he has to say, and what he believes. The majority of his statements are in line with my own worldview. It's just too bad that he went just a little bit too far. Well, at least he looks bearishly manly doing it.

TRON: Legacy

"Libations...for...everyBODYYYYYY!" In one of the most unforgettable characters ever, the two-faced Castor is flamboyant, ostentatious, and cool. Hardly manly but still somehow unendingly awesome, who could forget Castor? (Also, his girlfriend/partner in crime Gem is unforgettable as well, and she herself almost made this list.)

Scarecrow / Dr. Jonathan Crane
Batman Begins, The Dark Knight

"Would you like to see my mask?" Evil yet sophisticated, monstrous yet ingenius, Dr. Crane as the Scarecrow makes Begins possible, and TDK more fun. He's so much fun to watch, and Cillian Murphy does good work as well (watching him and Tom Wilkinson play off each other is just great).

TRON: Legacy

Predictable? I say classic! This role may not win any Academy Awards, but, come on, what a cool bad guy! That cut-out trench coat, that amazing moving helmet, and that scene towards the end with those chanting soldiers...I'd pay mega bucks for all of it!

Sure, he barely speaks, but he fights like a maniac. His helmet was literally fashioned after an ant cephalon, the actor knows parkour, so it's a pure pleasure watching this guy go to work with his dual discs. And isn't Rinzler just a cool name anyways?

Come on! Who doesn't love the Mad Max movies? And come on, it's "The Ayatollah, of Rock 'n' Rollah!" ...ok, so whatever everyone else thinks, I think this guy's a great villain.

He wants the Bible...but not because you or I might want one. He wants to rule with it. He almost gets his way, if it hadn't been for God's soldier, Eli. Gary Oldman is always excellent!

Classically evil, eminently hate-able...Carver Doone vs. John Ridd is one of my favorite good vs. evil pairs in film.

This was a messed up movie, for sure. Beyond Tarantino's bizarre twisting, it's even inferred that Hitler is assassinated.... The only good parts of this film had this guy in them. Not merely your usual evil Nazi...he talks, and talks, and talks, and boy is he creepy! Good acting, that.

This lesser-known movie (due to it being Korean) is one of my favorites. Sin is a bad, bad guy, it is true, but why he made this list (besides the fact that it's once again Jang Dong-Gun)? His words: "If anything happens to my sister...I'll cut your throat."

I've decided to try out a new blog series, likely ongoing, just for fun. It amuses me myself, knowing that with just about everything, I have a different outlook than most people. Be it from politics to movies, science to a new piece of technology, art to clothing, Spencer likely has something unique, unusual, strange, or downright barbaric to say. Without trying to be arrogant, you have to admit I, what I say, and this blog are...well, unique, right?

So I thought I'd amuse myself, and perhaps my readers, with a new series: "Spencer's idea of...."

Today's topic: the United Nations!

Spencer's idea of the UN is ancient Greece in the time of Alexander the Great. With all of the city-states (poleis) united into one Greek nation (all done with military force, mind you), it was time for a little "aggressive expansion". Alexander then used the "United Nations" to begin conquering the known world.

Yup. The UN is a war machine. :-)

In Time - New Dystopian Sci-Fi Flick

I don't know about you, but this one looks pretty exciting to me! (Sans Timberlake and what appears to be possible sex scenes, of course.) I'm loving the idea of time as money--works well for a dystopian story, one of my favorite genres of all time. I could see this potentially coming about, in small ways (likely never as completely as in this piece, but then again, that's my usual approach to all dystopias--I tend to believe a little of each of them is soon coming).

One, I loved the director's other film Gattaca (which, by the way, everyone should see as it's a chillingly accurate vision of the future), and I also enjoy Cillian Murphy's work (and do I see a leather trench?). I also see in this trailer a small view of the future (as something seems to be imbedded in their arms). A day will come when we have no IDs, no cash or credit cards, no papers; it will all be installed on a little chip that is inserted in the body (likely on small children, perhaps even infants at birth). This chip will also surely serve as a tracking device, and, who knows, perhaps a form of control as well (I'm thinking perhaps some sort of stun or a nervous system shutdown option, just to make it easier for them to come and "apprehend" you if they so choose).

But just about any new dystopia is something I'll check out, pretty much. What do you guys think?

The Dark Knight Rises Teaser Trailer

I often wait until a trailer comes out to get too excited for a movie.

K, I'm excited now!

Take a look at it; you might want to do so before continuing to read my words, as they are "spoiler-y". It's short, and has a few clips from Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, including voice-overs from Ras al-Ghul.

What makes a fan like me freak is seeing Commissioner Gordon in a hospital bed (and clearly seriously injured--Bane?), and hearing Bruce Wayne's voice in the background, talking to him about Batman needing to return (apparently Batman is "gone"?). (Serious fans of the first two films will be able to tell that this is NOT Batman's voice, but Bruce Wayne's--which begs the question, does Gordon know of Bruce's/Batman's secret?)

"We were in this together," Gordon says, "and then you were gone." He then says something about "evil rises", and "The Batman has to come back."

Bruce: "What if he doesn't exist anymore?"

Gordon then says, "He must...he must." (At least I think that's what he says).

We then see a shot of an obviously, let's say, beat up Batman backing away, and Bane stalking into the screen...and then that's it.

While all this really is is a "teaser" as it's being rightfully called, it's still given me some fan food for thought already, perhaps in an unexpected way: the score.

As my readers should know, I'm a massive fan of Hans Zimmer, and his other two soundtracks for these films are some of the best ever done, in my opinion. The soundtrack to Batman Begins was animalistic and intense. When he did The Dark Knight, the intensity remained but the animal qualities were traded in for an almost technological, machine-like sound. I've been trying to figure out just what he had in store the third time around. I have to admit, I didn't figure on this.

Listen to the sequence when Batman is backing away from Bane. Do you hear that? Still intense, yes, but what other element does it have that the first two did not?

The human element! A choir--and no cheesy choir, mind you. It's about as intense a choir as I've ever heard. And come to think of it, after animalistic and technological, what else is there to do? This is perfect! I've already watched the trailer a few times just to hear the music in that portion. Well, ladies and gentleman, we can fairly assume that Mr. Zimmer has, once more, done it again!

On other notes, I'm so excited to have Bane (will he ever say in the movie, "I will breeaaaak yoooouuu!!"?) as I've been begging for him since the first one came out (literally), but I hope it doesn't get messed up with Catwoman (uggh), and the title is lame, in my opinion (the first two titles were amazing--why this cheap redux?). Anyhow, you have to wonder what the heck they did to poor Tom Hardy, and if he will ever recover, to make him look like such a monster. (And a PS on my part demands NO SEX!)

This should be interesting.

Well, I did my favorite movies a while back, why not some of my favorite movie characters?

The possibilities are endless, so I decided to limit it to primary characters (in other words, so I wouldn't list the "manly Viking in background" or something like that), and men, only (sorry, ladies--your favorite movie heroines is a post for you to do, not me!). I also decided to only cover fictional characters (which means Patton from Patton, Stonewall Jackson from Gods and Generals, Doc Holliday from Tombstone, and Ip Man from Ip Man are all out unfortunately). This is just an off-the-cuff just-for-fun post, so it's by no means all-inclusive nor in any great order either. (Please also note that I cannot and do not endorse all the below movies, all the actions of said characters, the actors, etc.) So let's start, shall we?

Batman / Bruce Wayne
Batman Begins, The Dark Knight

One of my favorite parts of these movies is watching Bruce develop--from a wandering soul into, literally, a driven warrior. Far from mere comic book silliness, these two (perhaps soon to be three?) films give us endless food for thought on a number of manly topics--namely, manliness! Repeatedly and endlessly, he puts the needs of others over his, is willing to risk and give his life, even his good name, for the good of the people he serves. Beyond manly. (Did I mention that he beats up bad guys?)

Neo / Thomas Anderson
The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions

Setting aside his own life, Neo sets out to free the human race, to fight for the people he loves and cares about, to destroy the machines, and he wears black and looks beyond awesome doing it. While perhaps not the most chest-pounding character you've ever seen, when he's in his confident warrior mode, it works well. Besides, watching a man in a trenchcoat and shades fight evil with everything from guns to swords, or even his bare hands, will always be a thousand times more beautiful and artistic to me than even the Mona Lisa could ever be.

Cleric John Preston
Equilibrium

Sure, you may condemn him in the beginning of the film, but that's the point. This dystopian tale is also a tale of personal growth and, in a way, discovery of identity. No longer was he a puppet of the totalitarian state, a pawn-like instrument of destruction. No, he became an instrument of destruction--his way! This means more epic manliness as Preston fights for everything in the entire world (from freedom, to the innocent, even to the women he loves) and with his black coat and guns, he looks great doing it. (Another plus for me, but perhaps not intended by the filmmakers, was how he learned to control himself--namely, that wayward monster, emotion.) As usual, another great manly-character from Christian Bale.

John Connor
Terminator: Salvation

This reworking of the weak kid-portrayal of Connor as seen in T3 is pretty much marvelous. Again driven by Bale, we have a manly man who is again fighting for everything in the world. He's a strong warrior who is almost Churchillian in his refusal to give up. Even after many years, he still heeds advice and reminds himself of the vision of his dead mother. He loves his wife, he loves his men, and he's willing to die for the cause. He looks like a man, and he acts like a man. What's more, he hates machines! What more could Spencer ask for?

The Book of Eli

Ah, Eli! Here's another cinematic gem of a character! In one of my favorite genres (post-apocalyptic) we have a man who tries to do the right thing in the face of a world fallen from anything even near decency. He's committed to God (literally) and also learns from his mistakes in how he deals with people. While again I don't condone all of his actions, him learning from them is part of the point of the film. While I'm not a serious fan of Denzel, he does always give a good, reliable performance, and we see that here. And heck, he cuts people up with a machete. C'mon! Manliness!

Bryan Mills
Taken

Don't mess with this dude's daughter, or else...you're gonna die! Liam Neeson is great as the ex-some-sort-of-government-special-agent who loves his daughter above everything else in the world. While clearly flawed (divorced, though we are given more than a few hints it wasn't really his fault), his relentless pursuit of his "taken" daughter is beyond manly. With the exception of my two moral quibbles in my review here, I'd do everything he did and perhaps more. To boot, he wears a leather trenchcoat and walks around with a look that says, "Would you like to die?"

John Lee
The Replacement Killers

I'd recommend that you watch the deleted scenes to this movie at least once, otherwise the story and especially the character of Lee are not fully understandable. [Spoiler warning!] The reality is, Lee may be an assassin, but he does his work to protect his mother and sister. When he's given the target of a young boy, he finds he cannot do the job. All that he has to turn to is more violence--this time, against the mob boss that had formerly been his employer. That's one of my favorite movie themes--killin' with a cause! Not your average action flick, rather a redemptive tale, especially on the part of Lee (and also on the part of Mira Sorvino's character, Meg Coburn), and otherwise unique as well. He also looks cool while he's killin', too (while perhaps not something for real life, it works in movies).

Mad Max Rockatansky
Thunderdome

Sure, he's flawed, but why I like Max is because of the good that is in him. When his wife and child were murdered the event turned him into "Mad" Max, to be sure, but he's still one of the good guys (from helping the refinery clan, risking life and limb for a band of children, and even refusing to kill Blaster, whom he discovers is mentally retarded). Besides, it's post-apocalyptic, and he looks great in those cowhides!

Hawkeye and Uncas
The Last of the Mohicans

Why I chose two characters this time is because they both fill pretty much the same role in the movie (as in respect to manliness, not overall, of course). You mess with their women, they'll shoot you with their muskets, or hack you apart with their tomahawks, or cut you up with their knives. It's as simple as that. [Spoiler warning!] Uncas dies like a man, too--just the way to go! (Might I also mention the extremely manly end of the minor character, Duncan.)

John Ridd
Lorna Doone

Don't take my word for it--just go and watch this movie! [Spoiler warning!] He sets aside his own personal desires (namely, revenge for the murder of his father) to take care of his family, and then when he meets his woman, he fights for her against the classic villain Carver Doone. Even when he has his chance to murder Carver, he still refuses to take his revenge. A character who does his duty and exercises control--very manly!

Van Zan
Reign of Fire

He kills dragons, carries an axe, rides a tank, [Spoiler warning!] dies like a man, and is dressed in post-apoc garb. Are you beginning to notice a pattern? (Not to slight the also very manly characters of Quinn Abercromby, played by Christian Bale, and Creedy, played by Gerard Butler.)

Lee Jin-tae
Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War

The older yet uneducated brother to a younger, weaker, brainier sibling, this movie is a brutal tale of the Korean War, and more specifically, what war does to a person. I find Jin-tae more interesting than Jin-seok (who's something of a whiny wimp)--sure, Jin-tae [Spoiler warning!] is so torn by what happens to him and those around him that he defects to the Communist North, but in the end, he comes back (dying whilst machine-gunning down attacking North Koreans, in one of my favorite scenes from the film). I also love the actor, Jang Dong-Gun. Always deep and manly. *pounds chest*

The Last Samurai

While this movie makes a mess of history, I just can't not love this gruff, grumpy samurai who knows who's boss (i.e., he is). Watching him train is great, watching him lead others is good too. Watching him kill scads of ninja is beyond amazing, and watching him refuse to give up, [Spoiler warning!] even when he is already on the verge of death, is also great stuff. I think that in one part he says in Japanese, "Who's your daddy?", except I can't speak Japanese so I'm not sure.... ;-P

Dragon's World: A Fantasy Made Real

A strange choice, you say? Not to Spencer! Check out this little gem of a "docu-drama" and you'll see why this daring, more-bucking scientist is manly. He's manly because, well, he bucks the mores and he's daring (enough to say and do what others in academia will not)! These are themes I will forever appreciate. Oh, and did I mention he's a paleontologist (with a penchant for dragons, of course)? It is all this that makes me forgive his long hair and un-Spencerish clothing. :-) (Sorry the picture isn't better, he's the one on the left FYI.)

And why don't I go ahead and do some TV shows too?

Battlestar Galactica

While far from perfect, this guy is freaking amazing. One of those strong, stubborn military-type personalities, this is the kind of guy you'd charge the gates of Hell for if he ordered you to do it. He does his duty, refuses to give up, even to seemingly insurmountable odds, and he also loves his crew, a definite requirement in my opinion. So let's raise our glass of ambrosia while we give Adama a hearty, "So say we all!"

Beset by circumstances out of his control (only one being his father's disregard), Jake is one of the few men who step up to the plate and get their hands dirty after a TEOTWAWKI event hits the United States. His sense of duty, of right and wrong, and his unending willingness to go the extra mile to do what he should, is more than most males can claim of themselves these days. He stands out from the crowd (and that isn't merely because of his brother, "Dudley Do-Wrong", either).

Malcolm Reynolds
Firefly, Serenity

Despite his many flaws (only one being his grouchiness sometimes tending towards unkindness), Mal is still a manly man. He'll fight for his crew, [Spoiler warning!] he won't quit resisting the totalitarian Alliance, and he's willing to die to save his crew. And if you insult an escort whom he happens to like, he'll happily duel you to the death, knowing he's going to die in the process. Why? Because that's just Mal--he does what he does, no matter what.

Nick Cutter
Primeval

[Spoiler warning!] It's rather telling when a show begins to fall apart after the main character actor (Douglas Henshall, playing scientist Nick Cutter) leaves. Despite that, the first two seasons have him in all his manly glory. While Series 1 is the strongest, you see him work through incredibly trying circumstances in Series 2 (as well as wear all black!). He may be the scientist, he make call the brain-boggle shots, but he's still get up and go when lives are on the line. Come to think of it, at the end....

So many different knives! Which would you choose?

I've been thinking lately about this subject. Sure, to most people a knife is just a knife, nothing more. To me, knives are a way of life (a big part of my life anyway), and the different styles and kinds of knives are endless. If I were a rich man, I'm sure I'd have more knives that I could even count. I like many different kinds, but I have an overriding style preference that comes out in my own knife choices. Take a look at some of my most-used knives.

See a pattern? They're functional! (And black, if at all possible.) I love each of them and have specific uses for each one.

The massive Jim Wagner one is practically an extension of my own body, it's almost always with me and she is my trusty sidekick. I decided to spend the $100 on this one for one reason only--I wanted a knife I could trust my life, and the lives of my loved ones with (without breaking my budget--my first choice, Kelly McCann's $400 Blackhawk design, was far out of my pricerange--and another contender at the time, Boker's Applegate-Fairbairn knives, were nixed because they were fixed blades--preferable to me but legally more difficult to carry). This was my choice, and I've never spent a better $100, let me tell you! A heavy, sturdy workhorse is all I can call this baby (and I could go on and on...but I won't, for your sakes! ;-D). Stylistically, it's a beautiful masterpiece that suits my tastes very, very well. I went with the folding knife (and not the fixed blade) largely due to legal issues, the serrations because I love them and prefer them practically, and the tanto point, well, because I love tanto points!

The smaller Jim Wagner, although in my opinion too short (too short to be a pen and particularly too short for my hands--two-handed opening is therefore necessary because of this, a tactical negative), is still a useful back-up for situations when a heavy, bulky knife is hard to carry (in such situations, for me this knife is filling the gap voided by the lack of the above knife and therefore is in use as a self-defense weapon). Extra props that it can be much more convincing as a pen than my other Wagner knife (they come with either glass breaker or pen cap tips, removable and interchangeable).

The CRKT money clip knife was something I knew I just had to have the first time I laid eyes on it. It's an amazing little work of art, my only quibble being that the clip is so tight that it's hard to get things under it (I suppose that's better than dropping your cash!). I opted for no serrations, even though I usually prefer them, due to the fact that the kind of use and carry this knife would be dealing with, I thought a non-snagging smooth edge would be a bit more efficient.

When I went about deciding what knife would fill the void I'd been having trouble with--namely, the void of a tool that was relatively inexpensive yet still high-quality (nice enough for me to want to carry it but not so pricey as for me not to use it for every dirty task I find it useful in), I went to Gerber. Perhaps not the most prized knives in all the world, but my experience with them has been nothing but pleasing. I chose the EVO Jr. for a few reasons. It was a folder, not a fixed blade like the Midi-scale (and therefore easier to carry), it wasn't a tanto point (I decided a tanto point wouldn't be ideal for tool usage in this particular case even considering my undying love of them), and it wasn't nearly as big as the original EVO. Perfect to slip in my already-packed left pocket as a tool-only knife (my right pocket being occupied by my self-defense knife).

And last but not least, the Spyderco Firebyrd! Marvelous in concept and efficient enough in execution, the plus-side of going after a member of the Byrd line from Spyderco is that you don't have to pay the expensive prices that normal Spyderco blades run for. True, the quality is a little less, but I have no big issues with this knife. My only quibble is that the blade does not lock--not too good if you're going to be risky with your fingers, but fine if you're careful with what and how you're cutting; I understand the difficulty of attempting to work in a locking mechanism in what is already a bulky design. But come on, who doesn't want to carry fire and cold steel in one package?

My next knife purchase will likely be this hard-looking little charmer girl. I'm planning on getting the survival kit attachments, and can anyone guess what color I'll snag?

So you see, you can tell a lot about people through their choices in knives! How "Spencerian" were the paragraphs above? Intensely so!

Come on, now, I have to ask you all to humor me for just a little while. I'm dying to know, really I am! What kind of knife would you choose? If you have one, what is it? Do you like it? Would you replace it with one that better suits your needs? If you don't have one, what would you go for first?

An Update

After carefully reviewing my position, it looks like I have 2 (maybe, maybe 3) months before The End. That's at least moderate news. However, my position continues to be dangerous and tactically ill-advised. I need a victory, and ASAP. I've displaced/fallen back far too many times the past few years. It would be nice to succeed for once, and push forward. Drive them back!

I need to win this battle, so I can continue in the war. What follows is many, many battles, a good deal of them expected to be far uglier than this one. It matters not; what matters is that I want in on it.

I always find watching Patton encouraging. I did so a couple of months ago. I'm now reminded of the scene, "An entire world at war, and I'm left out of it?!?! God will not permit this to happen! I'm going to be allowed to fulfill my destiny!" A world may not be at war, it is true. But the entire universe is at war instead, as it has been since Lucifer's rebellion in Heaven. This isn't a war of men, armies, or nations. It is a war of finality in its foretold and consummate conclusion. For now, it is all that there is. God vs. Satan. Good vs. Evil. Don't you want to be a part of that? I do. (After all, He did die for me and all my many screw-ups, now and in future, so it's only proper that I swear allegiance unto Him and fight in His army, don't you think?)

If I can win this battle, then I can continue picking off the obstacles that oppose me, one by one. It's taken me years to even subsist in the stasis that now has been removed from me. I want progression. I want purpose. (Agent Smith, anyone?) Like Patton, I want to "fulfill my destiny". God chose my destiny; therefore, following this path is in line with God's will. It may not always go about like I plan it or want it to (i.e., like right now!), but the war is our destiny, whatever part we take in it.

True, they came for me. But if I can win here, get back on my feet, and start campaigning again...I'll come for them.

I fought in the shade the entire day. Well, in all other ways perhaps, less the comfort.

No word. No news. No nothing. This isn't necessarily a good thing, neither is it necessarily bad. It simply means nothing, or at least nothing I can know. It could really mean anything from deliberate strategy to a lack of supplies, a poor oracular reading, or even truly nothing. My situation is, therefore, the same, which means I still need your prayers please, and especially prayers for the cause.

The situation I have been alluding to might be over--only with the worst ending possible. I have spent years working against this. It is a war that almost entirely consumes me. It is what I live for.

Tonight events played out, and it is now more than likely that Monday I will finally lose the war. After such an event, there is precious little likelihood of me being able to maintain the fight.

Please pray for me, please pray even harder for cause I am fighting for (I would willingly give my life for it, here and now), and please pray to God and ask Him to send His humble warrior-servant some back-up, because I can't do this alone.

Bush was considered a monster for starting two wars. Obama has continued the same two, and begun two little ones now. But Obama is God! Oh, how dare I forget.

This is clear scheming; Obama, if not a full Muslim himself ("...my Muslim faith..."), is very pro-Islam. So what are his purposes in these actions?

While unfortunately I can't say for sure what is going on (Do you really think I trust the media? And besides, it's "secret"!) if we take it at face value...perhaps to create a situation of "Jihad" backlash against America? Just by going how he behaves with issues here at home, it's clear to me one of his strongest, most abiding traits is an absolute hatred of America and everything good about her, so...I don't have difficulty buying this one.

On the other hand, it is also worthwhile to revisit the analyses of the reason behind the Libyan conflict, here by Glenn Beck, and here by my friend Gravelbelly.

Greetings, my epic-minded friends!

In continuation of this post here, I've picked a list of entrance themes...note I said "theme-s" and not "theme"...for how could I choose just one? An entrance theme is to make one's entrance known, at a particular place, at a particular time, to a particular group of people, when you're in a particular mood and about to do something in particular, most likely. How could I choose just one?

An entrance song is very different than a theme song, and I've been thinking about doing a theme song post for some time. Just note that these two lists are different, and also, will overlap a fair bit. In order of preference, I give you, the list of Spencer's entrance themes!

"End of Line" - TRON: Legacy Soundtrack by Daft Punk

I was actually surprised that this made top of the list; not that it isn't epic and amazing, but that nothing else could beat it. Listen to it, watch the "entrance" scene from the film that this is played in, and tell me, is this not epic? It just screams, "I am cool, I am confident, and I am on the scene!"

How to Die Like a Christian Man

Some of you may have noticed the more personal messages Doug Phillps has been sending out of late. I hope he will not mind when I post this one here for the benefit of us all. It is well worth your time.

Beloved Friends in Christ:

In one week I will be in Rome standing where the Nazis stood during their occupation in 1943, and where the allies marched during their triumphant liberation of the city in 1944. Just a few days later I will be on Omaha beach with a hundred home educators, veterans of D-Day, as well as French survivors of the Normandy liberation.

It will most certainly be the last time in history when these men and others like them will gather in this number to remember the greatest amphibious assault in history, and the most carefully planned battle of the 20th century, in what was undoubtably the greatest war of the last one thousand years.

I am going for many reasons. Today, I want to explain one:

We are gong to tell our sons what it means to die like Christian men. We are going to point our daughters to the examples of those men who are willing to live for something more important than themselves.Huguenots

Here is my view---if you do not have something worth dyeing for, you have nothing to live for.

I am a Christian. That means I must be willing to die for Christ. In my view, this is the only thing worth dying for.

But such a death takes many forms and expressions.

We might be called to die for the doctrines of our Faith, as did the Huguenots, the Covenanters, and so many others in Church history. We might be called to die because the State hates our Faith, as did many of the early martyrs of Rome and the coliseum.

And we might be called to die in defense of others remembering that greater love hath no man then that he lat down his life for his friends.

It was for this reason that so many Americans died on Utah and Omaha beaches, and in the fields of Normandy on June 6, 1944, and in the days that followed.

For many reasons World War II is a landmark in our history as a nation. It was the last constitutionally declared war; It was the last war fought by men who were born from parents who themselves were born in the age of Christendom and the pre-modern world. It was also the last war which was inaugurated with clear military objectives only after we had been formally attacked by another nation. Notably, it was the last declared war to be fought predominantly by men in the field, while wives and daughters stayed at home.

But there is another point worth remembering---WWII was the last war in which our leaders and allies formally invoked the name of Jesus Christ in their communications. It was their presumption that they were defending what Churchill called "Christian civilization."

We should not be surprised, therefore, that amongst the ranks of heroes on D-Day were individuals and leaders who invoked the name of the Lord, who sought the favor of the living God, and who taught their men what it would mean to die like a Christian.

One example was Lt. Col. Robert Lee Wolverton, a West Point graduate, responsible for commanding the 3rd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division,

On June 5th, before his men boarded their C-47 aircraft Lt. Col. Wolverton prayed:

"God almighty, in a few short hours we will be in battle with the enemy. We do not join battle afraid. We do not ask favors or indulgence but ask that, if You will, use us as Your instrument for the right and an aid in returning peace to the world.

"We do not know or seek what our fate will be. We ask only this, that if we must die, that we die as men would die, without complaining, without pleading and safe in the feeling that we have done our best for what we believed was right.

"Oh Lord, protect our loved ones and be near us in the fire ahead and with us now as we pray to you."
There was silence for two minutes as each man contemplated his duty to fight, and perhaps die like men.

With this mandate, Colonel Wolverton ordered the men: "Move out."
In their book "Tonight We Die Like Men" (by Ian Gardner and Roger Day), the authors explain that Wolverton believed that he would die in the Normandy operation, so he wrote 21 letters to his 1 year old son to be given to him at every birthday until he was a grown man.

Within 30 minutes of the drop, Lt. Col. Wolverton was killed. He landed in a tree just outside of St. Come-du-Mont (near where we will be in Carentan). He was unable to dis-entangle himself and was shredded by German machine gun fire.
Oh, God help us to die like men.

My throat was bleeding a little while ago. Well, it's really just a scratch. Someone just tried to pwn me...with this technique here (see 2:55). Needless to say, a quick and effectively painful block for my opponent was in order. A tiny scratch is far better than a choke attack, would you not agree?

I was eating a sandwich at six this evening...this is how much I cared. Posh! (In other news, post-apocalyptic roast beef tastes just as good as pre-apocalyptic roast beef. Funny, I was half-expecting it to turn into Tasty Wheat.)

Beyond the fact that abuse of Scripture is more than a pet peeve, it never ceases to amuse me how Godless and unbelieving idiots can wonder, "Well maybe the world really IS going to end on [fill in the blank date]!" You don't believe the Bible, but you think some wacko or other who's abusing the Word has good ideas? Beats me how you came to that conclusion.

What amuses me even more is this whole 2012 thing. I love to tell people, "I'll see you January 1st, 2013." Or, for even more fun, I like this routine. You should try it!

*subject makes some statement about the "possibility" of the world ending in 2012*
"Do you know who came up with that idea?"
"Uhm...the Mayans?"
"Right. Do you know any Mayans?"
"No...."
"Neither does anyone else. They disappeared, they're extinct. Archaeologists, scholars, scientists and experts still have no idea what happened to them. So, why are you listening to them again?"

OK, so perhaps it isn't 100% kosher, but the overall theory works well. I love messing with dumb people. I think, from here on out, I'll call it "fizzling" with imbeciles. Yes, that sounds good. It's from this time when a guy I know begged me to continue telling another person about comets, because he "want[ed] to see her brain fizzle out!"

Lady Gaga: Revisited?

[ADULTS ONLY PLEASE! No direct sexual material is discussed in this post, but due to the subject matter, and the link to my old article, I am impelled to enforce my adults-only policy here, too.]

So you all remember my original massive work on her, don't you? To date, it's been my most popular post of all time (only recently being surpassed in webpage hits by my review of The Matrix).

About a month after my Poker Face review, Gaga's Bad Romance video was released...and I realized that I wasn't yet done with the topic. Now that she's about to release her new album Born This Way, is anyone interested in an update?

Her two newest singles, the title song Born This Way and Judas, are both massively immoral (can you guess in what way, from seeing the titles?), (her newest of the new, The Edge of Glory, I haven't yet analyzed) and with the year and a half past since my initial work on the topic, we've had Bad Romance, Telephone, Alejandro, countless interviews, and even a biography that I read last fall (that was poorly done). There's plenty of information to be had, and I still have plenty to say.

I thought I was done after mucking about through the muck originally, but I don't think I'm finished. My question is now, are my readers interested in a return to Gagadom? I'm skeptical that my readers appreciate my "work" in this area, but still believe it is greatly important (I've received countless hits on the original article, most from searches--I'm at least getting my message out). I am still unhappy by what is around her--sure, it's her that's is the "big" issue, but I'm consistently frustrated by Christians dabbling in her music, average people not understanding, or not caring to understand, the moral depravity of her material, and, what's most disturbing to me is that so many parents allow and/or encourage child-based fandom of Lady Gaga. (I've seen it more than once, and each time it bothers me more and more.) The little singer/dancer from New York's nightclub scene has attacked all that I hold dear, and I am therefore unkeen on subdued and unresponsive silence.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Lady Gaga is a marvelous artist. She's captivating to the masses, and this is indeed our very problem. I believe she's bringing out her biggest guns for this her new album, and I'm impelled to ask myself: Are my readers looking for more? Can they handle more? Should I disregard the topic for their benefit, or for some other reason? Or should I just "maverick" it and charge ahead?

Animal ethicists are calling for a new vocabulary about animals, shunning words such as “pets,” “wildlife,” and “vermin” as derogatory and even suggesting “animal” is a “term of abuse.”

Common language on fauna betrays an “anthropocentric bias” and impedes an understanding of our interaction with the non-human species sharing the planet, argue the editors of the first academic journal dedicated to animal ethics in their debut issue.

Instead of “pet,” the Journal of Animal Ethics suggests “companion animal.” Rather than “wildlife,” they are to be called “free-living.” “Differentiated beings” or “non-human animals” is preferred to simply “animals.”

Words such as “vermin,” “beasts” and “critters” are stricken completely, along with similes such as “sly as a fox,” “drunk as a skunk,” “eat like a pig,” “slippery as an eel,” “breeding like rabbits” and “stubborn as a mule.”

“We will not be able to think clearly unless we discipline ourselves to use more impartial nouns and adjectives in our exploration of animals and our moral relations with them,” the editors write.

The argument has led to a public outcry that political correctness has run amuck, but the journal’s co-editor insisted terminology has the power to change how people think and act.

“The fact that some have reacted so furiously suggests that our language is much more revealing of our attitudes than many suppose. We have started an important debate,” said Andrew Linzey in an interview. “We were trying to help people see the connection between what we think and say about animals and how they are treated....”

"...terminology has the power to change how people think and act." I entirely agree--which is why we must never, ever accept this kind of ridiculous garbage. Funny, it seems, but insidious is more accurate a term.

A nightmare for you is an escape for me

Last night--or this morning, rather--I had a dream. This is the first dream that I've actually enjoyed in years. All I have are nightmares anymore.

What's funny to me is, this is probably most other people's idea of a nightmare, and here I woke up all pleased!

The dream began in the thick of it. I was some sort of knight, I believe. It was night, and I was part of a force assaulting some kind of fortress (mostly wooden, but some of the interior was perhaps stone, so maybe it was just a castle). One could only see from the fires that had broken out. The battle was coming to an end. The enemy had black surcoats. I don't know what color ours were.

I think it was late, date-wise (if dreams even have "dates"). I wore mostly plate armor, as did my foes (Gothic if I am not mistaken). I had picked up a great axe, or rather something of a halberd, also of a late look. In dreams, I am often slow and sluggish because my body is tired in the real world, and here it was quite annoying. But I was mad. Very, very mad. Enraged, perhaps.

I picked off the remaining knights and men-at-arms, one by one. I cut them to ribbons. I hacked arms off, cut open torsos, destroyed heads, limbs, and any bit of body I could find to maul. I cut so many down I don't even remember them all. I killed countless, slashing through them like so many clumps of butter. Like I said, I was angry. Most are a blur; I only really remember one in any detail. I'd hit him somehow, and he had fallen with his back to me, still in a sitting position of sorts. I brought my blade down on his shoulder, only a few inches away from his neck. His arm disappeared in an instant, and a red, ragged stump was all that remained. (Off topic: strangely I remember little blood.)

Once the "fortress" was taken, inside we discovered an inner chamber that held some of what we had come for. Here's where the dream became strange, k? Inside this chamber was a man, his wife, and his two small children, held prisoners (they were our friends somehow). Either this man, or I myself, was literally Beowulf! Here the dream took a "barbaric" turn (i.e., everyone looked like a barbarian or Viking, not like a member of the 1400's chivalry). (Also off-topic: large, spindly spiders scurried around the floor.)

The dream ended. We had won the battle, freed our friend, and I'd sent more of my enemies to hell than I even knew. Whether I was "Beowulf" or not matters little. For me, sometimes I wish things really were this simple. Instead of living life as it is today, I'd far prefer to have my troubles take the form of physical men, and then I could go and fight my enemies and kill them with a sharpened edge. Then at least I'd be done with my battles. Right?

Osama bin Laden: Is He Really Dead?

I've been waiting for this little bit of news for ten years now. I am disappointed to have to say tonight, I'm not sure that I believe it.

Straight from his 2012 threat (Donald Trump) and the countless cries of "Forgery!" that have echoed since the birth certificate release (Did you really think I was alone?), this little development strikes me as far too timely. Something in me refuses to not ask the question, is this a desperate attempt by an ever-less-popular political schemer to revamp his image into a successful American leader, just in time for election season?

Of course, lying about this is quite risky, not to mention enormously dark. I want to see the body, I can tell you that much (of course it is possible that if this story is indeed true his face...well, isn't quite pretty). How long does a DNA test take, anyone know? Depends on how recent the kill was supposed to be, I guess.... There are countless reasons why I could be wrong here. Obviously I don't know, and I would love nothing more than to be proven wrong. The death of a monster is something I'm not afraid to smile at.

But you'll forgive me if I have difficulties trusting our current "fearless leader".

Gods and Generals: Director's Cut

Has anyone seen the Time magazine special edition for the 150th anniversary? I picked it up but haven't had the chance to read it yet (I'm sure it'll be more revisionist history, just like their normal magazine issue a few weeks back that I read, replete with a photoshopped Lincoln with tears--how sad!), but the back does have a preview of the Gods and Generals director's cut. Apparently Gettysburg is also part of the release. And on the Fourth of July! Friggin' patriotic, it is!

I'm so excited! I can't wait! So Amazon now has it on their site, and for only $55.99, I think that's a fair deal for this spiffy set. Seeing as I paid around $25.00 for the TRON: Legacy special edition...twice that is well worth it for Gods and Generals. I didn't think Gettysburg was amazing, but still good, yes. I'll probably be putting them into my Amazon store in the near future.

Who else is getting pumped?

All I can say is, after so long, even ignoring all the issues with the document, do you really think I'm that stupid? Of course it's a forgery! (Trump deserves great credit for this, yes, but does anyone realize that Jerome Corsi's book Where's the Birth Certificate? is soon to be released?)

Screw stressing out, I'm having a fun post today.

As time has progressed, I've been able to have more than just five favorite movies. So let's try to come up with my top ten list, shall we?

Gods and Generals

You might see that that's only eight. So allow me to ask for my reader's help on this one. What two should go next, out of The Book of Eli, The Replacement Killers, or Saving Private Ryan? One must be cut! I'm tempted to cut SPR, because I only like the battle scenes and don't care for the middle parts (characters are ridiculous, plot is shoddy and boring).

This list would look very different if certain movies had not had objectionable content (whether it be sex, nudity or false religious messages). Somewhere on this list might have been films like The Matrix (false religious themes), The Matrix Reloaded (sex and more of the same as the first film), Blade Runner (was that one nude shot really necessary?), Equilibrium (less content rather than insidious anti-Christian intent from director Kurt Wimmer), The Road Warrior (in such a world rape makes sense, but do I have to see her naked dead body?), and et cetera. But content is content! I will not endorse what I do not believe. And heck, even some of my "favorites" are near-sketchy (TRON, anyone? Programs can be equal with humans? *spits*).

...see this article. I may not be a true Beck follower, but Huckabee's comments about Beck's "conspiracy theories" and his lack of foresight on Michelle Obama's "war" on obesity do not sit well with me.

I'm not going to "side" with either one...but Beck's mind machinations seem to be more like man than Huckabee's. (On a side-note, this all smells like politics, doesn't it? I wonder if Beck has his eyes on the White House...but so far I see little reason to surmise such.)

Don't laugh, it's happening all over. Check this out.

Should you think that this is a well-intentioned attempt to better "The little children, for the chiillldreennn!!!", then take a look at this. One, they don't take the matter of proper eating at all seriously, and two, if it means forcing junk food on your child, they will do that as well.

And if you haven't yet heard of this, it's been going on for a while.

Personally, I am very serious about eating healthy and providing my body with the best material for it to run on. I haven't eaten chocolate, candy, or sweets in a good seven or eight years, and soda in a decade or more. But this is my freedom to choose this kind of lifestyle--if I want to eat Snickers, Ho-Hos, and smoke and drink all day long, then that is my right as well! Heck, if I want to huff bird poop before breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and then do it again before bed, that is my right, too! It's not an issue of health; it's an issue of control. Control the food, and you're just one step closer to controlling the people who eat that food. Miniplenty, anyone?

Am I the only one who has a problem with the fact that our meat, fruits, vegetables, and just about everything else we buy are jacked up with all manner of hormones, pesticides, and chemicals? Even public water supplies can contain loads of crud (I know mine does). It isn't at all about what is good for us. It's about what they want in us.

Who's to say there won't be a day when they put a mysterious new drug into your food...a drug that makes you....

I was thinking on this subject a bit tonight, just in passing mental reference, and it just reminded me of the other night.

Last week, I went outside late at night to do some business (my usual darkness rounds--you know, slaughter chickens, hunt goblins, and munch on raw, undead trolls and such), and as soon as I stepped outside, I knew something just wasn't right. I could feel it.

I carry a big Maglite with me, because it's pure pitch around my grounds. Covers the fighting stick and illumination problems all at once. So somehow I get the feeling nothing's too bad (as in, I continued without worrying). It was something in nature that was wrong. It wasn't another human, it wasn't something along those lines; it was the animals...or, something. I could tell that something wasn't right with the local nature. I scanned about, also, as is usual. I found a rabbit...hmm, ok, perhaps nothing is wrong? (Like common small prey animals, they make themselves scarce when there is an "event.") I found a black mass around a corner--the local black cat, which is quite possibly a bi-polar cat. (I try to encourage it to take care of the rodents and such, but we've had a testy relationship ever since he scratched me once.) He ran away, rather skittishly, rather unusual--I tried to get him to come back (sometimes he will for me, sometimes he won't--again, I told you he was bipolar). So, perhaps it was all just me. I went about my business.

Something was still wrong...I just couldn't place it, prove it, or anything of the sort. So when all was said and done, I again passed by the corner the cat was hiding in prior...and lo and behold, I saw something where the cat had been sitting. I stepped closer, and shone the light.

A dead, mangled corpse...of a squirrel. A fresh kill...barely eaten, with head nearly severed, organs, especially stomach, hanging out. And a small lizard, inches away.

I had interrupted the cat's kill, which is why it behaved abnormally (even for an abnormal feline). What's more, I had found what was "wrong"--the fresh squirrel kill was surely enough to make habitually nervous little animals on edge. Perhaps what was "wrong" was with the local squirrel population (which is large, let me tell you)--they'd just lost one of their own to a violent death, not common for my little squirrel clan. This, understandably, put them on edge.

I still don't know how, or why, but sometimes, just sometimes, I can sense the strangest things.

Maybe it's just me, and I understand that this is just a well-intentioned attempt to make the figure more posable than past Pooh representations have been, but all I see is this freakish monster that is really quite disturbing.
