HSLDA: California AB 2943 - Spanking Illegal?

Assembly Member Sally Lieber has reintroduced her “anti-spanking” bill with a new number—A.B. 2943. Last year she attempted to push her bill, A.B. 755, through the legislature, and it was officially stopped on January 31, 2008, when it failed to be passed out of the Assembly. Identical to her failed A.B. 755, A.B. 2943 would have the practical effect of making a non-injurious spanking with an object such as a ruler, folded newspaper, small paddle, etc. illegal. After being arrested, charged, and tried in a criminal court, parents could receive up to one year in jail and lose custody of their children. When Lieber claims that her bill only deals with child abuse, remember that she has stated repeatedly that all spanking, by definition, is child abuse. Her strategy in A.B. 2943 is to treat all spanking with an object as criminal child abuse. She has deliberately failed to make any distinction between spanking as a method of discipline and true child abuse.

I won't spank my children (at least not with an object, and not when they're older than, like, two or three), but I was spanked until I was ten, with a wooden paddle.

I turned out just fine. 8-)

Come to Utah, Spencer.

That's because if you spare the rod you spoil the child, Nathan. ;-P I guess that means you aren's spoiled!

Wait wait wait, I know! I'll live my days as part of a museum exhibit, and when nighttime comes, roam about at will!

...or maybe I should grow all hairy and live in the woods, and then jump out and unsuspecting passersby?

Or even smash and cut my face up then wear a mask and live under an opera house. :-P

Nathan: Of course, spanking helped you turn out! :-D

I was always so sensitive, sitting in the Naughty Chair (*shudder*) scarred me plenty good enough. Though my younger sister, being made of tougher stuff, got spanked a lot. *is a tattle tell*

What's weird to me is everyone in CA (mostly) loves CA, and everyone (well, a lot of people) out of CA want to go/move to CA... I'm glad my dad rescued my mom from that state! (She lived there till he married her and forced her to move to FL.)

LOL!! Point taken. But sorry Nathan, I confess I have this rather romantic stigma attached to both Texas and Montana...*sigh*

*facepalm* This just proves how badly you need to see PotO....

I was a very bad child and got spanked enough. ;-P Although probably not as often as I deserved...my mom's favourite punishment for me was to have me write out the book of James. 8-/

Heck, I LIVE here and I don't get why people love it so much. Does anyone want to trade?!?? (haha)

I do not think I would mind if someone rescued me from CA...*halo*

*pause* Oh dear. This turned out to be rather long. :-/

This is why I begged Amy to let me stow away in her suitcase when she goes to Ireland. She logically pointed out that I wouldn't, but nonetheless she burst my green bubble. :-(
